The Euclidean plane cannot be colored with five colors
One of the 372 results in OpenAI's public mathematics catalogue, filed under combinatorics: 1 preprint, the latest dated 23 September 2026. This page quotes OpenAI's own summary of the claim, links the paper and abstract, and embeds the animation.
What OpenAI claims
Proves that every five-coloring of the Euclidean plane has a monochromatic pair at distance one, with no restriction on the color classes. This advances the Hadwiger–Nelson problem: together with the classical seven-coloring, only six and seven remain possible chromatic numbers of the plane. (Lean)
Paper
The Euclidean plane is not five-colorable
We prove that every coloring of the Euclidean plane with five colors has a monochromatic unit-distance pair, with no regularity assumption on the color classes. Consequently, the chromatic number of the plane is either six or seven.
Status
Preprint. The paper has not been independently reviewed. Treat the result as OpenAI's claim until other mathematicians have checked it. If a video exists, it illustrates the statement; it is not the proof.
